edersilva Parents are important for kids education 0 Dec 10 2008, 7:09 PM EST by edersilva

My parents always worked a lot, and we didn't spend much time together. I know they influenced my life a lot, but I wish I was closer to them. My parents immigrated to the U.S. when I was 14 yo and I was in Brazil until I was 21.
There are so many kids around the world who don't live with their parents and for that involve with gangs, drugs, and traffic. There are reasons why they do that.
Parents should be present when the kids need them. Sometimes the world judge teenagers for what they do, but they don't look why they do.
So many things involved with education, school, personal life, and families, that have to be considered before we judge them.
They need a campain to alert parents of how to raise a child, teenagers to become better than they really are or can be.

micposso@gmail.com parents should spend more time with their kids. 1 Oct 29 2008, 9:54 PM EDT by Ramver

I grew up with lots of liberty, however, my mother always had a close eye on me and more importantly, she was my friend and we talked all night. This could be very strange idea for children today since they spend so much time playing video games, watching TV and using the computer.

I think if a child wanted to find potential harmful information, he would still find the means to reach it. For example, a parent may have many filters in his child's computer, but the child may still go to a friends house and bypass all those limitations. Personally, I think that parent should use tools like kid friendly searches and filter programs, but never neglect communication with their children.

Please read the following blog post response from our familiar David Pogue, where he also assesses the role of parent when it comes to the internet and the media on their child’s life.

10609381 Suggest, enable, talk to your children 1 Oct 29 2008, 9:39 PM EDT by Ramver

The possibility of having the world in front of your screen is an amazing advantage that one should cherish with the internet. However, we all know that this is also a danger for kids and teenagers that can be exposed to explicit and dangerous content or people. One of the most important measure parents can take to reduce the risk of having their children endangered is talking to them. Inform them of the harmful side of the internet. Having a computer in a family room where children can be monitored is also a good suggestion. Moreover, every once in a while, parents should check the History option in the computer's browser to monitor the websites that have been visited. Suggest kid friendly search engines such as Yahoo for Kids (http://kids.yahoo.com/learn); Ask.com for Kids (http://www.askkids.com/) or any other similar is a good resource to get kids accostumed to use certain websites instead of others. Setting a kid friendly search engine as the computer homepage is very easy and wise in order to prevent them to look up information somewhere else. Also, be aware that Google - the most used search engine in the internet - has the option to filter what kind of information will pop up when you make a search. Just go to http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=en and set the highest level of security filter. The internet can bring anything or anyone to your children's life. The number of pedofiles using the web is higher because the can hide behind fake profiles and names. That is why it is very important to take all these measures and keep an eye open on what your children have been doing when they are closed in their rooms surfing the web.
