Online LearningThis is a featured page

Online learning is a major use of the internet. It is growing disproportionately quickly due to how cost effectively it uses the technology. Online learning is only in its infancy in terms of using internet technology. As internet technology matures, it should provide a learning experience that is superior to face to face (f2f) classes.

Student Learning Outcomes:

After completing this assignment the student will be able to
  • show the technology used to both mimic F2F teaching/learning
  • investigate new technologies available only to online learners
  • discuss the benefits and drawbacks of internet based learning versus f2f

Procedure

Today we have a rebuttal from John Sener, an online learning consultant and director of special initiatives for the Sloan Consortium, a group that promotes online education.

Discuss:

  • What makes online learning different from F2F? How is that better? How is it worse? Can the problems be solved by a combination of online and F2f (also known as hybrid or blended). Be very specific. Give examples.
  • Use a table to list the benefits and drawbacks of online, hybrid and F2F. Is there agreement that these are benefits and drawbacks?
  • How important is each factor to your taking you education online?
  • Do some some subject lend themselves to online or F2F? Why?

Online learning is another manifestation of the power of the internet.

Many school offer great programs and utilize interactive tools to recreate a classroom environment as much as they can. I have a friend who is a HS teacher in north Carolina, she is currently a full itme teacher, but also is conduction a online class which she takes very seriously. The reason why the school system where she works opted to offer online classes for high school students is because of overcrowding. My friend does not treat her online student’s nay different than her regular students, she communicates with them over the phone, she offers those extra on-site help and also she talks to the parents from time to time to discuss the student’s performance. She also has to set up times to chat electronically with the students. My friend is such a good teacher, that she even uses Google calendars to send her students cell phone text messages reminding them of homework and lessons. She also uses other extra resources available for free on the web to enhance the learning experience.

Online learning can be great educational asset for struggling school districts, it can relieve school overcrowding. However, teachers, specially, older teachers would have to receive some sort of training before embarking into teaching an online course so they can be more attune with technology and the potential of the web.

Another great aspect of online education is the fact that the student can pace himself, in a class, the teacher teaches at the rhythm of the whole classroom and this can be counter productive to the most committed students because it can drag their performance down. I’m taking a math class online with UCC, and I have been able to jump to the next segment of the course ahead of time, because I was able to digest all the material at my own pace.

10609381 Good for self learners, bad for the unorganized! 0 Sep 30 2008, 2:01 PM EDT by 10609381

As Artemio said, convenience is a key word when it comes for one to choose an online course. Since there is no class regular schedule, you as a student can adapt your studies to your own schedule making the process of learning easier. I tend to be a self-learner, so an online class allows me to learn at my own pace and through investigation and curiosity. I believe that makes the class more interesting and personal. Saving money and gas is also great!

The biggest drawback is definitely the wait to get responses from the professor and other students, and I believe the same rule applies to the professor. You need to extra organized in order to keep track of all the information all students send and the date, etc...

This is my second online class and sometimes to be honest I feel a little lost. But following the calendar posted on webct is making my life easier now.

The benefits of Online Learning listed on the assignment that I agree the most are #2, 4, and 5. Taking online courses are very convenient especially to those who have families and does not really have time to go to class. Also, many students tend to be very shy to answer questions in class and participate. I admit that sometimes I could be like that. It makes me feel uncomfortable when all of the students are looking at me, puts me "on the spot." But the one that I agree the most is that it saves students money and gas, especially since gas is very expensive now.

The main drawback of Online Learning is the speed of feedback from the professor and the students may take some time. It is all because students and the professor log on whenever they are available.

Each factor is very important when taking online courses. A student must consider each factor prior to taking online courses. Online courses is for students who wants to do their work at their convenience, whenever they are comfortable.
