Q: What is a wiki?
A: A Wiki is a form of website that is entitled for editing or adding digital information by any users who can access to the site and are a member.

Q:Whose idea was it?
A: The first Wiki was made by a computer programmer named Ward Cunningham in 1995. the term Wiki is from a Hawaiian word that means quick/fast and the first local word that Ward learned on a visit to the islands.

Aloha!

Why use a wiki?
Why not?
Yes
No
  • It's a great way for a group to communicate.
  • Prefers face to face interaction.
  • Easy editing.
  • Dislikes computers.
  • Makes meetings more efficient.
  • Needs some kind of organization to coordinate.
  • Can be like an online club.
  • Anonymous people, anonymous ideas.
  • Can be edited by anyone involved.
  • Information can be faulty.
  • Can be edited by more than one person at once.
  • Contradicting information can be added at once.

Differences Matter

  • Blogs
Wiki and Blogs...Blogs and Wiki--What's the difference?!

These analogies may help you understand it better if you're more of a visual learner.
  • Forums
Forums are another collaboration based sites like the wikkis. many people can post topics, videos, replies, or pictures. Unlike a wiki though not everyone can edit the forum, or the site. People in forums post a discussion starter and all the other people simply reply. There is no adding or editing the original data unless you are the one who created it in the first place. Visitors can come and go for a forum, but people are there to stay for a wiki.

"Fundamentally, forums and wikis serve different purposes. wikis are good for creating a relatively compact knowledgebase, but aren't great for building a community. forums are much better for allowing members to interact with each other, but the knowledge tends to be dispersed and somewhat lower in density. "

Also you can have several forums inside a wiki, but you cannot have a wiki inside a forum.

  • Chat
Chat is communication using an instant messenger. It is usually done in synchronous, allowing people to communicate in real time. This is somewhat useful, but only works when both people are online at the same time. Messages can be left, but it becomes more or less like email. Wikis, on the other hand, allow people to communicate in a series of editable messages that can be changed simultaneously. And unlike chat, you can erase what you write, after you write it.
